Happy Jele and Fortune Makaringe returned to the Buccaneers’ line-up after the draw at Royal AM on Friday, while there was a welcome return for goalkeeper Ronwen Williams.

The Buccaneers needed to win by five clear goals to secure Confederation Cup football and they were nearly off the perfect start when Kabelo Dlamini picked out Kwame Peprah who blazed over the target.

While Makaringe’s return was expected to help Pirates going forward, it was his contribution defensively that saw his side fall behind on 19 minutes when he nodded a corner into his own net.

Pirates looked to get back into the contest immediately, as Peprah held up the ball well in the box before seeing his strike crashing against the upright with Williams seemingly beaten 10 minutes before the halftime break.

The Soweto giants came out firing in the second half, which nearly resulted in the equaliser four minutes but SuperSport’s Keagan Johannes cleared Peprah’s headed on the goal line.

With the visitors struggling to break SuperSport down in the second half, Mandla Ncikazi and Fadlu Davids looked to the bench and introduced Terrence Dzvukamanja for Makaringe.

However, things got worse for Pirates on 66 minutes when SuperSport were awarded a penalty after Thamsanqa Gabuza was brought down by Jele, who was shown a straight red card.

Ghampani Lunugu stepped and had his spot-kick saved by Richard Ofori, however a retake was needed after the goalkeeper came off his line and the SuperSport forward managed to convert on the second attempt.

The Buccaneers still had the possession as they looked to pull a goal back in the closing stages, but SuperSport did well to hold out for the win and clean sheet, sealing eighth spot in the process.
