South Africa cases rise by 3,916, deaths rise by 159

Health Minister Zweli Mkhize, on Wednesday August 19, announced that the number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 in South Africa had risen to 596,060. This is an increase of 3,916, with the total number of confirmed cases rising to 592 144 on Tuesday August 18.

Mkhize announced a balance sheet update of 12,423. This is an increase of 159 from 12,264 on Tuesday August 18th.

“Sadly, we are reporting 159 other COVID-19 related deaths – 37 in the Eastern Cape, 43 in Gauteng, 45 in KwaZulu-Natal, five in the Free State and 29 in the Western Cape”

A total of 3,455,671 tests have been performed to date and 25,324 new tests have been reported. So far there have been 491,441 recoveries, which corresponds to a recovery rate of 82%.

LATEST CASES OF COVID-19 BY PROVINCE AS OF WEDNESDAY AUGUST 19

The following confirmed cases of COVID-19 were detected in each province as of Wednesday:

  • Eastern Cape – 84,362 cases
  • Free State – 33,163 cases;
  • Gauteng – 202,011 cases;
  • KwaZulu-Natal – 107,271 cases;
  • Limpopo – 11,944 cases;
  • Mpumalanga – 22,067 cases;
  • Northwest – 23,641 cases;
  • North Cape – 8,341 cases; and
  • Western Cape – 103,210 cases
  • Unknown – 50 cases.

This represents a total of 596,060 confirmed cases.

COVID-19 DEATHS BY PROVINCE FROM WEDNESDAY

The following confirmed COVID-19 deaths were detected in each province as of Wednesday:

  • Eastern Cape – 2,670 deaths;
  • Free State – 542 deaths;
  • Gauteng – 3,061 deaths;
  • KwaZulu-Natal – 1,788 deaths;
  • Limpopo – 159 dead;
  • Mpumalanga – 214 deaths;
  • Northwest – 214 deaths;
  • North Cape – 100 dead;
  • Western Cape – 3,675 dead.

LAST RECOVERIES BY PROVINCE

Mkhize announced the latest COVID-19 recoveries as follows:

  • Eastern Cape – 79,947 recoveries;
  • Free State – 19,548 collections;
  • Gauteng – 167,812 recoveries;
  • KwaZulu-Natal – 82,599 recoveries;
  • Limpopo – 10,281 recoveries;
  • Mpumalanga – 19,436 recoveries;
  • Northwest – 14,980 recoveries;
  • North Cape – 4,961 recoveries; and
  • Western Cape – 91,877 recoveries.
