Shodipe Sunday: Oyo students protest against escape of prime suspect in Akinyele murders

Dozens of students from some higher education institutions in Oyo State protested on Wednesday against the escape of a first-rate suspect who was arrested in connection with the murder of some innocent citizens in the area of Akinyele local government.

Ontopnaija has learned that Sunday Shodipe, a suspect who had been arrested in connection with the murders of Barakat Bello, Azeezat Shomuyiwa and including a five-year-old boy identified as Mujeeb had already been paraded along with two others on July 17 this year by Enwonwu .

However, police under the direction of state police commissioner Joe Enwonwu said on Sunday that the suspect had escaped from custody.

In a statement released by its public relations officer (PRO), Mr. Olugbenga Fadeyi, the Oyo State Police Command said the suspect escaped after being charged in court.

But students led by Tope Adewolu, to protest the suspect’s flight, stormed the police headquarters in Eleyele, Ibadan, to register their grievances over Shodipe’s escape.

Adewolu, who is the general secretary of the Student Union government at the Federal College of Animal Health and Production, Moor Plantation, Ibadan, told reporters the students were troubled by the news of Shodipe’s leak.

He said the students believed that a man arrested for the murder of at least three students should not have so cheaply escaped custody. He said students in Oyo State wanted him to be arrested again and prosecuted accordingly.

He said: “We are here to show our grievances about the relentless rapes and brutal killings in Akinyele. We were happy when the police arrested the criminal. He was presented to the police headquarters here and later taken to court.

“We learned that because of COVID-19, he was being taken into custody instead of jail. But we were shocked to learn a few days ago that the criminal had escaped. After his escape, we heard about another murder in the same Akinyele. How can they claim that a 19 year old criminal has escaped from custody? ”

Enwonwu, while addressing the students, said the command was doing everything possible to get Shodipe to re-arrest as quickly as possible.

He assured them that the suspect would be back in custody as soon as possible.
