M5-RFP, the Malian coalition behind the mass protests, said the arrest and detention of President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita and Prime Minister Boubou Cissé was a coup.

The coalition, which called resignation of Keita and the prime minister, said detention by mutinous soldiers was “not a military coup but a popular uprising”.

“IBK did not want to listen to its people. We even offered an alternative but he responded with , ”Nouhoum Togo, spokesperson M5-RFP coalition, told Reuters agency, referring to Keita by his initials.

Ontopnaija reported on Tuesday that Malian soldiers arrested the country’s president, Ibrahim Boubacar and Prime Minister Boubou Cissé.

Ontopnaija had reported that soldiers earlier Tuesday had rounded up senior government and military officers in Kati town and elsewhere.

During the arrest, thousands of citizens applauded the eviction.

Crowds rejoice in Independence Square in Bamako, Mali and elsewhere.

more than nearly three months, protests demanding Keita’s resignation took place.

Dozens of people lost lives, a situation which aggravated the crisis.

Keita’s withdrawal comes amid intervention by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
