Edo / Ondo 2020: INEC must strengthen the use of the portal for viewing electoral results

The civil society situation room called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI) to step up the use of its results viewing portal to ensure transparency in the upcoming elections for governors of Edo and Ondo states.

Mr. Clement Nwankwo, head of the Situation Room, a coalition of civil society organizations (CSOs), made the appeal at a press conference in Abuja on Tuesday, reports NAN.

Nwankwo also praised INEC’s trial of the portal, where voters could see the results at their voting unit within hours of voting.

“The Situation Room welcomes INEC’s trial of a portal where voters and the general public can view results at the online voting unit within hours of voting.

“We saw the ballot this weekend for the Nasarawa State Assembly where voters and observers were able to view the ballot results online on election night itself.

“This is an important step forward for the transparency of elections in Nigeria which should be strengthened and rigorously enforced in the upcoming elections in Edo and Ondo states.

“This proves that it is possible for every voter to have better access to the record of what happened in their polling station,” the official said.

Nwankwo also urged INEC to ensure strict adherence to its guidelines for the conduct of the election and to clearly define punitive measures for election stakeholders who flout the commission’s COVID-19 guidelines.

According to him, the group will deploy 300 election observers each to monitor the elections in Edo and Ondo.

He advised security agencies to be non-partisan before, during and after the elections, to abide by the CENI code of conduct and the rules of engagement for security personnel on election missions.
