BEST Quinoa Vegetarian Burgers – The Healthy Maven

Looking for an awesome veggie burger recipe? Look no further than these quinoa burgers made with quinoa, white beans and hearty ingredients, perfect for your next burger night or your next meal!

Grilling season is upon us, which means one thing and one thing BRING THE BURGERS! This includes my veggie burger folks who prefer to skip the meat. I’ve mentioned it before, but I’m not a typical burger lover. I would rather have a veggie burger or a turkey burger every day. These quinoa burgers are no exception.

They have the smoky taste of a burger but without the meat and even though they are not vegan (they are vegetarians!) I assure you your veggie lover will always approve. I prefer to do them on the stovetop as it’s still a bit too early to start grilling here, but I’ve included the cooking instructions below. Plus, these freeze really well, so feel free to make them ahead of time and freeze them when the weather starts to heat up. Any day now Minnesota… I’m ready !!

What you need for quinoa burgers

These quinoa burgers require minimal ingredients, but all are needed for flavor and texture. Where possible, I have indicated easy substitutions.

  • quinoa – I like to use white quinoa but you can also use tricolor
  • Cannellini beans – large Nordic white beans or other white beans also work
  • Breadcrumbs – You can also make a sub with panko or gluten-free breadcrumbs
  • Grated sharp cheddar – do not hesitate to subtitle yourself with another cheese that you prefer
  • Egg – I haven’t tried this with a flax egg, but you can try!
  • Clove garlic – very thinly sliced
  • Spices – paprika, cumin and sea salt
  • Rolls and optional toppings i.e. lettuce, onions, pickles, ketchup, mustard, etc.

How to make quinoa burgers

STEP 1: Cook the quinoa according to the package directions and let cool to room temperature or until it can be easily handled.

2ND STEP: In a large bowl, mash your cannellini beans using a potato masher or the back of a fork.

STEP 3: Combine all the remaining ingredients until they come together.

STEP 4: Using your hands, form 5 to 6 patties. Add a little olive oil to a large skillet and heat over medium-high heat. Add the patties to the pan and cook, 2 to 3 minutes per side or until the outside is golden and crisp.

STEP 5: Add to buns and garnish with desired toppings.

Can you freeze quinoa burgers?

Yes! You can freeze these quinoa burgers. I like to bake them, then wrap them individually in foil, then store them in a ziplock bag or freezer-safe container. You can take them out of the freezer a few hours before eating them. Heat in the microwave or on the stove. Note: Freezing them individually allows you to remove the number you prefer rather than the entire batch.

Unfortunately, I did not try to freeze them before cooking them.

Make them on the grill!

You can make these quinoa burgers on the grill! I recommend placing a piece of foil directly on the grill and spraying with olive oil. The cooking instructions remain the same – about 2 to 3 minutes per side on a medium-high grill.
