Police arrest rapist of 11-year-old girl after CCTV evidence released

Delta Police have confirmed the arrest of a 30-year-old man identified as Jomaph who allegedly raped an 11-year-old girl in the town of Sapele, Sapele LGA of Delta.

Delta Police Command spokesperson DSP Onome Onovwakpoyeya told reporters in Asaba on Wednesday that the suspect was arrested after being captured by a CCTV camera sneaking into the toilet to meet the victim.

“The young man was arrested after being captured by a nearby CCTV system, sneaking into the toilet with the little girl.

“The suspect has been arrested and the case is currently under investigation.

“After a preliminary investigation, the case will be transferred to the State Department of Criminal Investigation (SCID), Asaba,” he said.

NAN reports that the incident happened around 7 a.m. on Wednesday August 12 on the Oleh road to Sapele.

A source who spoke to reporters said the victim allegedly used the bathroom but returned minutes later crying that she had been raped by Jomaph, who is a neighbor of the victim’s family.

He however denied raping the girl when approached about the allegation.

“When we asked him about the allegation, he denied, he even swore he hadn’t laid eyes on the girl that morning.

“Other neighbors begged him to tell the truth, but he maintained his position that he had never raped the girl.

“Jomaph even reported the girl and her parents to the police for defamation of character.

“However, a CCTV camera installed by a neighbor for his business later showed the moment Jomaph snuck into the bathroom immediately after the girl went to the bathroom,” the source said.
