ASUU strike: union gives condition to reopening schools

The Union of Academic Staff of Universities (ASUU) has given new conditions for the reopening of schools.

The union announced that, among other things, the federal government must pay the salaries of certain members who have not been paid.

ASUU also announced the development of an alternative to the integrated payroll and personnel information system called University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS).

Speaking at the University of Abuja, Gwagwalada campus, the Union’s national president, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, informed reporters that the programs were part of the conditions imposed on the federal government to end the strike in Classes.

He said the software will meet the specifics of Nigerian universities, private and public.

The ASUU launched an indefinite strike on March 24 due to disagreements over the IPPIS platform.

During the press conference, Professor Ogunyemi said the new platform has not yet been subjected to an integrity test by the federal government, however he expressed optimism that the government will respect its commitment.

“We advise that the government at the federal and state levels should comply with the guidelines specified by the task force for the reopening of educational institutions, we insist that all salary arrears withheld by our members at federal universities and State must be paid immediately to prepare for further discussion on the issues pending in the Memorandum of Action of February 7, 2019, ”he said.

Adding that “We sincerely hope that the government will not renege on its promise because the benefits of UTAS for the university system (both public and private) cannot be found in any other software in Nigeria today. Now that the union is on the verge of responding to the government’s demand for an alternative to IPPIS, we sincerely hope that the substantive issues related to the ongoing strike will receive the desired attention, ”he said. .
