Mali: African Union reacts to arrest and detention of President Keita and Prime Minister Cissé

The African Union Commission responded to the arrest and detention of Malian President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita and Prime Minister Boubou Cissé by mutinying soldiers.

The African Union Commission kicked the arrests of Keita, Cissé and other officials which took place on Tuesday.

The Chairman of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, also condemned any attempt at “unconstitutional” change while calling on the mutinous soldiers to respect the institutions of the state.

“I strongly condemn the arrest of President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita, the Prime Minister and other members of the Malian government and I call for their immediate release,” he wrote on Twitter.

DAILY POST reported on Tuesday that Malian soldiers arrested the country’s president, Ibrahim Boubacar and Prime Minister Boubou Cissé.

DAILY POST had reported that soldiers earlier Tuesday had rounded up senior government and military officers in Kati town and elsewhere.

During the arrest, there were scenes of thousands of citizens cheering for the eviction.

Crowds rejoice in Independence Square in Bamako, Mali and elsewhere.

For more than nearly three months, protests demanding Keita’s resignation took place.

Dozens of people lost their lives, a situation which aggravated the crisis.

Keita’s withdrawal comes amid intervention by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
