UIF TERS: CLAIMS FOR THE EXTENSION PERIOD
According to the new Management, an employer, or an employee, can claim UIF TERS benefits for the extension period from July 1, 2020 to August 15, 2020. The new directives cover the following categories of employees whose employers are:
- Not allowed to start operations under the Disaster Management Regulations;
- Unable to make alternative arrangements for vulnerable workers, such as working from home or taking special measures under the OHS Directorate to protect them; and
- Unable to make use of their services due to operational requirements caused by compliance with regulations and instructions, such as registration, staggered hours of work, brevity of time and the introduction of shift systems.
The application process remains the same for the extension period and all claims must be filed through the online portal here.
“As with the previous claims processes, to apply in the new period employers are required to upload similar documents which include: signed approval or acceptance letter, bank confirmation letter, proof of payment to employees and reimbursement to the UIF – if applicable, ”said UIF Commissioner Teboho Maruping.
“On guard[ing] With strict governance principles, we will continue to subject payments to bank verification before releasing funds to the applicant’s accounts. The immediate past has taught us that even under the pandemic, criminals are at large and seek to profit from it through their nefarious means. We have an obligation to do everything in our power to ensure that these funds are not deposited into the incorrect accounts, ”said Maruping.
DEADLINE FOR THE APPLICATION WINDOW FOR APRIL AND MAY
The UIF will send a letter to employers who have requested the benefits of COVID-19 TERS, outlining the process to be followed when requesting an extension of the period, and will also update the Frequently Asked Questions document to serve as a quick reference for the candidates. Updated FAQ, new direction and explanatory note will be available on the LED website.
The new focus and extension have been the subject of extensive discussions with Nedlac’s social partners and they have agreed that the deadline for the application window for April and May will be September 15, 2020. All new applications for these periods must be uploaded on or before this date to receive processing and payment.
“Existing complaints will remain open for correction and finalization beyond this date. Employers who are having technical difficulties creating – or accessing – their profile should immediately contact the call center 0800-030-007 for assistance. A reference number will be issued that will allow the resolution to be tracked and, in the event of non-resolution by the application deadline, it will serve as proof of efforts to comply within the timeframe, ”said Maruping.
