EFCC: Sagay denounces Buhari panel probing Magu, says they are all accusers

Professor Itse Sagay (SAN), chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee on Corruption, PACAC, criticized President Muhammadu Buhari’s decision to form a panel to investigate the suspended acting chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Ibrahim Magu.

According to Sagay, panel chair Isa Ayo Salami is the only with no vested interest in Buhari’s team.

“I criticize the Salami panel for gathering evidence the accusers behind Magu’s back and for not handing over the petitions him before defense,” Sagay said, according to the Nation.

The frontline attorney noted that the panel was filled with DSS, the Justice Department and other security agencies who are all accusers of Magu.

“Judge Salami appears to be the only neutral on the panel.

“The Golden Age Supreme Court once strongly condemned this in Chief Gani Fawehinmi v. The Disciplinary Committee of Jurists ([1985] 2 NWLR (Pt. 7) p. 300) like “come here quickly for your conviction assured”.

Sagay, however, said he believed Salami, whom he described as a man of integrity, will not allow any injustice to occur despite the composition of the panel.

Aliyu Lemu, Magu’s lawyer, said on Monday that client had not yet been told why he was under investigation.

Previously, Magu had claimed that some powerful toes he stepped on while doing job as EFCC president were there to tarnish image and destroy reputation.

Magu is under investigation for alleged mismanagement and lack of transparency in the management of assets recovered by the EFCC 2015 to 2020.

The presidency this weekend gave the panel led by Salami 45 days to submit its report.
