An anti-corruption group, Kick Corruption Out of Nigeria (KCON), petitioned President Muhammadu Buhari about the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for Governor of Edo State, Osagie Ize- Iyamu.
The petition was presented on Saturday, 24 hours after Buhari approved Ize-Iyamu at President Villa, Abuja.
He noted that the president must have approved Ize-Iyamu without knowledge of his corruption trial or abandoned the battle for partisan demands.
DAILY POST reports that Ize-Iyamu’s trial is before the Federal High Court sitting in Benin.
The other defendants are the former Deputy Governor of Edo, Lucky Imasuen; former chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) of Edo, Dan Orbih; Past President, Tony Aziegbemi; and Efe Erimuoghae-Anthony.
KCON spokesperson Lawrence Chukwu said the photograph of Buhari handing the APC flag to Ize-Iyamu as “a tragedy and a sign that once you are on the side of the powers that be, you can keep robbing the country blind. ”
The petition said that the fact that Kano Governor Abdullahi Ganduje was alongside Buhari and Ize-Iyamu demonstrated that corruption is celebrated in Nigeria’s office and number one residence.
The group accompanied the petition with Ize-Iyamu indictment, witness statement, banker’s statement, bail application, cash agent statement and the MD bank statement.
The petition also accused Federation Attorney General and Minister of Justice Abubakar Malami (SAN) of influencing the Federal High Court to derail the Ize-Iyamu case.
The federal government has warned against using the security of election officials to rig the September 19 elections in Edo state.
